Welcome! I am an undergrad student at the University of Richmond, working toward earning my elementary teaching license. This site, which I created to include an entire unit's worth of information and lessons, is dedicated to the First Grade Virginia Standards of Learning 1.4 and 1.5 which focus on the Life Processes of plants and animals. The site provides lesson ideas, resources, books, websites, and assessments for the unit. The plan is designed to cover 10 days of class instruction in science.
At the top of the page you will find tabs for each area of my unit instruction. Simply click on the tab to go directly to that information. The Content tab has a lot of information for you, the teacher, which will help you prepare to teach the lessons provided under the Lessons tab. If you click on the Lessons tab it will give you a list of the lessons and a general materials list. You can then click on any of the days in the Table of Contents or scroll over the Content tab to see a list of the subpages for each day. Finally, the books and websites tabs have sources that are good for students to use to aid instruction. These sources are intended for use by the student, but could always be used in the classroom as well if there is time. Each book is linked to the Amazon page where the book can be purchase, and each website is linked directly to the site. Finally, the Assessment tab has ideas for a final project that could be used to assess the comprehension of the unit by students.
Hopefully this plan at least gives you some ideas on teaching plants and animals to first graders. Good luck and have fun!
